Benton Harbor History Tours scheduled for 2018

Presented in collaboration by Morton House Museum and the Heritage Museum

The Heritage Museum & Cultural Center and the Morton House Museum proudly announce Benton Harbor History Tours, a series of historical tours scheduled in June through October 2018. Tours will take place on foot, on bike, and on the water, using the preserved streetscape and landscapes around the community to travel back in time. The tours will feature photos, maps, and stories from times past, collected over many years by the Morton House Museum and the Heritage Museum. Guests are advised to wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

2018 Benton Harbor History Tours Schedule

Walking Tours – Take a stroll back to Benton Harbor in the 1920s. Historic photos and stories will cover topics including the old ship canal and electric streetcars, business and community sites, prohibition, and the Vincent building’s ties to Chicago gangsters. Meet at The Livery Microbrewery. $5/ person suggested donation.

  • Sunday, June 24 – 2:00 to 3:00pm
  • Monday, August 6 – 6:00 to 7:00pm
  • Friday, October 12 – 5:30 to 6:30pm

Biking Tour – Bring your own bicycle and meet at the Morton House Museum for departure. The route covers about 3 miles where a guide will present information about Benton Harbor history and culture. $5/ person suggested donation.

  • Sunday, September 16 – 10:30am to Noon

Paddling Tour – This guided tour on the water explores the history of local maritime transportation and commerce, including a visit into the last remaining section of the Benton Harbor Ship Canal. Bring your kayak, paddleboard, or canoe (or rent) and meet at the Graham Avenue Boat Launch. Please reserve your tour time (and boat rental, if applicable) with the Heritage Museum (269-983-1191, info@theheritagemcc.org); RSVP is required.
Cost for this tour is $10/ person. If needed, boat rentals are available at a discount courtesy of Third Coast Paddling: $15 for single kayak or stand-up paddleboard, or $20 for double kayak.

Benton Harbor History Tours are presented in collaboration by the Morton House Museum and the Heritage Museum & Cultural Center.
